…as Saraki lauds 8th AWCON victory
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari will host the Super Falcons after their historic feat of winning the 2016 African Women’s Cup of Nations for a record eighth time, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
A source close to the team informed journalists that the reigning African champions will depart Lagos on Sunday (yesterday) for Abuja where they will be welcomed by the President.
“They were hosted by Emzor this (Sunday) morning in Lagos and will be flying to Abuja where they will be hosted by the President,” the source said.
Buhari had earlier sent a congratulatory message to the Super Falcons on their glorious feat on Saturday in Cameroon.
President Buhari tweeted: “Very sweet and well-deserved victory for the Super Falcons, African champions for the 8th time, congratulations to the Team, and to Nigeria.”
A solitary strike from Desire Oparanoize sealed Florence Omagbemi’s first AWCON title as coach. Omagbemi won three titles as a player.
Meanwhile, President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has congratulated the Super Falcons for emerging continental champions at the Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) for the eighth time.
Saraki said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, on Sunday in Abuja that the Falcons maintained their champions’ status in Africa.
Falcons won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Cameroon after beating the host team 1-0 to retain the AWCON title in Yaounde on Saturday.
