Like it was the case in previous seasons, there has been uncertainty surrounding the kick-off date of the new Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season. The League Management Company (LMC) initially suggested that the 2017 season will get underway first week of December in order to knock the teams that will be competing in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup into shape but that is unlikely to happen as no definite date have been announced yet.
Meanwhile, some teams have been busy poaching players from other clubs while others have travelled distances to play some friendly matches.
Both Rangers FC and Rivers United will be competing in the Champions League and will need more than just ‘Grade C’ friendly matches to attain the form they will need to face formidable opponents in the continent. In the same vein, preparation of Wikki Tourists and FC IfeanyiUba have suggested nothing close to their readiness for the onslaught in the Confederation Cup.
It is imperative the LMC gets the league underway on time otherwise we are poised for another woeful performance from our teams in the continent.
