The Ansarul Islam Society of Nigeria (AISN), yesterday, explained the rationale behind the decision to bestow the Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki with the highly revered religious title of Baba Adini of the association.
According to the National President of AISN, Alhaji Olayiwola Afolabi, while speaking in a telephone chat with National Pilot on Wednesday, the title was a befitting and well deserved one for Saraki considering his numerous contributions to Ansarul Islam in particular and Islam in general.
He noted that the association was a liberal one which has large number of people from various political parties in the country as members.
Olayiwola said Ansarul Islam was not a political organisation and its action to confer the title on Saraki was not based on politics or money.
He explained that the title automatically fell on Saraki who has replicated his late father by rendering numerous meritorious services to the organisation for the growth of the society.
He said the completion of the university projects rest only with Almighty Allah (SWT).
“We are not concerned about politics. Ours is a liberal organisation. His father was a product of Ansarul Islam and was given the title while alive. He contributed immensely to the development of the society, built and equipped a science laboratory in our secondary school in Ilorin.
“When the post was vacant, we thought that since the son is alive, we should bestow the title on him and Bukola Saraki has himself contributed over N40 million to the university project. These are aside other numerous projects he has done for Islam in general. I mean the Ilorin central mosque is testimony to his contributions among others.
“Ours is to propagate Islam and whoever is with us on this is welcome on board. We didn’t do it for any political reason and did not collect money from him.
“I have been contacted by people abroad by the issue and I have fully explained to them the reason for our decision.”
Afolabi advised critics to continue to believe and trust the organisation, adding that the award was purely on Islamic basis.
“I would advise those critics to believe in and trust the society because the award is purely on Islamic basis. We are not concerned with political affiliations; it was based on his contributions and not politics, which is not our principle.
“We placed the completion of the university in the hands of God; it’s a university for both Christians and Muslims. It is not that we are forcing Saraki to complete it but if he does, the reward is not for anybody but him,” that is it”.
Saraki was honoured as the Baba Adini of AISN in an elaborate ceremony at the proposed Kamaldeen University premises located at Ogidi, Ilorin, few weeks back where he further announced the donation of N10million and promised to ensure the completion of the project during his reign.
